Aren’t you worried?” she teased. “Lying to your pregnant wife like that?”
Jason made fun of some people.
“It’s fragile. No momentum. No spark. You’re different. When you give me a son, I’ll give up everything for you.”
He says it with ease, as if promises cost nothing.
Meanwhile, Emily struggled through hours of agony. Just before sunrise, a little girl was born – small, delicate, but breathing.
They named her Grace.
Shortly after giving birth, Emily lost consciousness due to exhaustion.
The following afternoon, Jason returned home to Bellevue, irritated but confident. He assumed that Emily had done as he had told her — she had gone back to her parents, embarrassed and defeated.
Instead, he found the doors wide open.
A moving truck was blocking the driveway. Two men were taking furniture out of the house — the crib he had refused to assemble, Emily’s antique dressing table, even the leather office chair from her study.
“What’s going on?” Jason shouted, heading towards them. “Who said you could do my thing?”
A man in a tailored suit came out of the front door, holding it in his hand or being served by the leather. It was Mr. Reynolds, the lawyer who had been in charge of Emily’s family affairs for years.
