Headaches, fatigue, and general weakness. Healthy, functioning kidneys convert vitamin D in our bodies to maintain strong bones and produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO). This hormone plays an important role in red blood cell production.
When the kidneys are not functioning properly, they produce less EPO. The decrease in red blood cells (which carry oxygen) causes rapid muscle and mental fatigue.
Warning: Anemia is common in people with chronic kidney disease. It can develop even when kidney function is only 20 to 50 percent of normal. If you get enough rest and sleep but still feel tired, lethargic, and generally weak, you should see your doctor right away.
You have dry, itchy skin. Healthy kidneys effectively remove waste and excess fluid from the blood, contribute to red blood cell production, and maintain adequate mineral levels in the body. Dry, itchy skin indicates that the kidneys are unable to maintain the proper balance of minerals and nutrients, which can lead to bone and kidney disease.
